ATTENTION XAQ AND RAVEN: PROJECT PROPOSAL

I have fallen hard for the UnderTale demo. I've played it and replayed it about a zillion times, now, and I've kind of been trying to push it on everyone else I know anyway, so it occurred to me that this might be a possibility for the next Team Hatoful project.

It's short, because it's a demo, so it wouldn't take over our lives for the next six months or anything. (Well, maybe mine, but for different reasons. Ahem.) However, there's tremendous replay value in that there's multiple endings, things react to how you play and even how you played last time if it's not your first run through, etc. Lots to explore, even without being long!

The story is amazing thus far ... I would describe it as comparable to Hatoful, as far as the swings between http://kjorteo.tumblr.com/post/51273583007/mukurohikusaba-and-if-you-choose-the-option -like moments and heavily emotional content. There are definitely feels to be had, but if you guys made it through The Day the Night Slept, you can handle anything. ;) And besides, it's good!

I've spoken with Budgie and David already and they're on board, so I guess it comes down to Xaq and Raven. It would be a sort of blind play-through, in that David would be the one actually playing/controlling and he hasn't touched the game yet, whereas I am already fully immersed (and have used that to make some casting decisions already, on the chance we actually do this) but obviously I know better than to say anything. :D Budgie got partway into it, just enough to decide it was awesome and she's on board, and then stopped. If Raven and Xaq decide to go for this, I'll leave it up to them how much (from zero to all to anything in between) they want to play beforehand.

Schedule-wise, we can take the start of this fairly slowly, since David still has his Super Metroid play-through going on, and I already have my Dagger of Amon Ra playthrough (though I would be more than happy to shift priorities and do this primarily and work Dagger in around that.) It shouldn't take more than a few gatherings to do it and that's after accounting for the multiple endings and such, but we can still take our time to pick a date that's convenient for everyone and ease back into this, rather than "I DON'T CARE WHAT YOU'RE DOING ALREADY UNDERTALE STARTS RIGHT NOW" or anything. Also, that would give us time to come up with a better structure for when exactly we meet up, so we could save time on the "waiting all day for everyone to arrive" thing, too.

So, there you go, it's another idea, anyway!

And of course, of course we're doing Xaq's Hitori shrine scene, too. It's too short to gather everyone together just to do that, but I've been waiting for some sort of new project to come along at least partially so that we can slip that in first as a warmup while we're all there. And then maybe UnderTale after that? Maybe? :3

I have been dying to play this... it strikes me as a weird choice to play in a group (an RPG feels like something too intimate, and with too infrequent dialogue), but then I'm saying that from the position of someone who hasn't had a chance to even install it yet, so I'm willing to defer if everyone else thinks it would work... I kinda feel like we should all at least have SOME familiarity with the subject matter before going in (we didn't go into Hatoful totally blind, don't forget!), but again, I'll defer if the people who've tried it think that it would spoil something to have gone through a bit of the intro (or whatever) on our own.

Also, for the record, I made it through The Day The Night Slept, but there were parts where it was sheer "well I have to see it through at this point". :p Especially in hindsight, I'm very frustrated by some of Moa's choices... "Teo likes it" is as much a warning as it is a recommendation, is what I'm saying here :P Though, I certainly can't see any harm in going through with a demo.

The one bit of good news is, I'm going to be on a four-day week from now on, so getting together for streams won't be cutting into as precious a limited amount of time as it used to... so that shouldn't be a problem at least.

I actually think it's fine if you scout it a bit first, if that's what you want! To be honest, the only person I specifically want not to do that is David. He's the driver and therefore the one who makes the decisions and such, and in something that takes your decisions into account as much as this does, I want at least that role to remain unspoiled by the knowledge of exactly what happens when you do whatever. Everyone else, I could go either way; as long as you don't spoil anything (and I mean anything, if he's on a path to mess things up and get the bad ending then let him), you can play it first or play it blind, whatever you think is best, I leave that up to you.

The UnderTale demo is an RPG, but it is ... slightly different in execution, in ways that should at least slightly alleviate some of those concerns. At the very least, every enemy down to the random encounters have a quick random Monster Party-esque sentence before they attack, so at least someone is going to have lines even in battle. :P

Are you being paranoid or out of line for taking the fact that I like something as a threat, as far as emotional content goes? Well ... no, that's actually a pretty accurate metric. ^>.>^; BUT! At least it's a choice thing rather than something that's completely unavoidable? (There are some endings that even I won't go near even though I know exactly step-by-step how to get them, because fuck you I am not doing that, but the better ones are better. X3;)

In short, I think it should be fine, and even if I end up being wrong, the demo isn't very long so we're not out a whole lot. :)

OK, well I'll take a little peek soon then. ;)

What difference would the 'driver' having peeked make, though? Don't we generally do this as a democracy? (Or are we making David do a stumbling-through, with assisted voice acting?)

Besides, if anything I'd say he's the most IMPORTANT person to have peeked at it, if only long enough to make sure he doesn't have frame rate problems like with Super Metroid, etc...

I'm half-tempted to suggest we should crowd-source the votes on what branches to take, but we'd have to see if enough people show up in the chat to something non-hatoful anyway..

I'm a bit worried about dumping all of the editing duties on David again anyway! Maybe we should just do this one live off of Google Hangouts or something?

Editing is definitely something to consider, and thank you for bringing it up! As much as I enjoyed Hatoful I'd got rather fed up of the editing process by the end - however, I could solve some of my own problems by editing a bit more loosely (though my perfectionism will probably defeat this). I hadn't thought of it because I'm enjoying the Super Metroid video so much, but a lot of that is due to the way that I can just cut out huge sections and leave only the enjoyable bits. (Perhaps the RPG nature of the game will lead to doing it for this as well).

I would definitely have to start it up and step through a couple of lines to check the framerate and everything, but broadly I trust my setup now. I'm also experimenting with FRAPS as a replacement for Camstudio, which has the potential to make things easier (and records much more smoothly - you'll see the difference when I next put up a video!)

Ah, I was going to respond to Raven, but you beat me to it, so I'll just put this here, instead. :)

I'm leaving the editing entirely up to you. Do what you did last time, try your new Super Metroid setup, just leave the Google Chat video as-is and call it good, however you want to go about it! I would say my one concern is that this game has excellent music (which almost goes without saying on anything made by Toby "Radiation" Fox, but still) so it'd be nice to capture that, but ... even then, it's not necessary; the soundtrack is right there, so it's not like it's inaccessible to the audience if we don't include it.

As far as decision-making goes, my biggest hangup is that I don't want to make it into some sort of formal official process, and in fact I'm already starting to get uncomfortable just discussing it at this great a depth. Let's not overthink this, shall we? That being said, for reasons that are themselves a bit of a spoiler, I'd at least rather have an established driver, but I'm not against some quick/casual chatter (because that's sort of what this group is all about) at least from the ones who haven't played ahead (no spoilers, obviously.) So it's ... sort of Stumbling-Through-with-help-ish, but ... agh, why am I defining this. Just play the game!

And of course, by all means, do whatever you have to do to test and set up everything! You're not violating some sort of sacred oath by just making sure everything works, for Heaven's sake. I'm not that weird about this!

I had actually been planning on skipping the demo to this, for the same reason we all skipped the Holiday Star demo - to not spoil any surprises.

Since I'm the only one in the group who hasn't experienced it yet, however, I imagine listening to my live reactions to it could prove amusing.

So yeah, I'm game for this!

Also, good point about Hitori's Shrine Visit being too short for a solo vid...I plan on making the next one a bit longer, but unfortunately it's been put on hold due to school; first few weeks are going to be a bit more hectic than I expected.

Actually, you wouldn't be the only one going in blind, if that's how you choose to do it. Like I told Raven, I'm just specifically trying to keep David blind because I want the driver not to know how beforehand how his actions affect everything, but everyone else is free to to take it upon themselves how they want to go about this--go in blind, scout it first, whatever you feel is best. I've beaten the demo several times and have completely immersed myself in it, Budgie got just far enough in one run to decide she liked it and then stopped, and Raven hasn't touched it yet but he might end up trying it before we start? I don't know what his intention is, actually, but he certainly could if he wants.

And, of course, if you want to preserve the surprise on your end, that is awesome as well. :)

Eee I'm excited. :D

With an introduction like that this is going to be absolutely amazing for me, I can tell.

Can I make a guest appearance? I could be the flower. . .or the ghost :#

But I'm already the flower, and without the ghost, I'm not sure if there are enough speaking roles for everyone else in a demo this size. :(

Besides, I'm always kind of perpetually leery about expanding the group, because it's already hard enough to wrangle everyone's schedules and preferences on what projects they want to do next and etc. just with the five!

Having played through it now, yeah, there could be a shortage of roles to fill. Though, what a game! Whow~

I do, however, have completely free availability. I would have been around for all the Hatoful events, if I weren't being intercepted by a giant Christmas holiday.
