All right, we have spent the better part of today messing around with the Hangout feature in Google+ as a means of doing this whole multi-person Hatoful thing, and the results are actually very encouraging! I think this is going to work, I really do.

Next weekend will be the real test, when I see if I can get the core Team Hatoful (that is, me/davidn/ravenworks/xaq, and possibly BudgieBin if I can work things out with her and she's good to commit to regular appearances and everything, that's still up in the air at this point, we'll see) together to do a runthrough of Anghel's otome route, mostly as a test of our overall dynamic/ability to work together as a group, and make casting decisions on the fly since only Sakuya and possibly Okosan are decided at this point. If that works (which I am actually very hopeful that it will,) then we're basically set to ... probably just ignore the HolidayStar demo, wait, and go into the full game blind, where the fun will truly begin.

The bad news is that this cuts down on the live audience portion, since I don't think there's a chat or anything, and therefore this will end up being more like an episodic broadcast show wherein the non-core audience members will just have to wait until we're done and watch the upload or something. On the other hand, if you thought feralmuse guest week in my Hatoful Streem was entertaining, today's tests have already confirmed that the dynamic with this many actual speaking hosts should really be something, and adding in text chat comments from the audience on top of the banter the hosts are exchanging with each other might actually have been too much anyway.

Anyway, today's experiments may have been a pre-test test just to make sure we're ready for the test, but I nevertheless find them very encouraging and am very excited about this project now.

I think the biggest wildcard for us in all this is going to be Tohri, one of the more prominent additions to the cast. Everyone else we've gotten enough exposure to that we have solid ideas of what their characters should be like, but this guy's gonna more or less be a blank to us.

Also, bit of a crackpot idea: If it ever gets fully translated, it might be fun to do a dubbing of Absolute Zero, a manga that basically shows what the world of St. Pigeonation's looks like...to Anghel.

I'm not afraid of initial missteps when guessing about unknown characters. It took three complete scenes with Sakuya in them in the first episode of my Hatoful stream before I decided to give him the accent, and DavidN's voices for Kazuaki and One were ... let's just be euphemistic and say "not entirely appropriate for what we would later learn about their personalities." These things happen!

And I really hope that gets a translation because it would be amazing.

Well, someone's apparently already underway on it, seeing as there's one translated page shown on there.

It'd probably take longer to get everyone used to the "right to left" style of reading that manga tends to take.

EDIT: Oh lord I just noticed Sakuya's white mage robes have kitty ears.

There is a live chat! You guys just weren't looking at it! You just have to open it in another window, is all.

If we stick with me as a host, what I think I'll do is have the live Youtube broadcast turned on but also do my own recording locally (I think I've got my codec settings worked out so that it's 5MB per minute instead of 50). That way, we have Youtube saving everything if the worst happens and I crash, but in the ideal case I have recordings of everything that I can combine back together into a complete 'fullscreen' video without the Hangouts borders - including the game music.

I can see it having the potential for chaos even with four 'players', but we need to remember not to take it too seriously - I know I'm not going to be editing out any particularly good mistakes ;)

As long as you take it seriously enough not to be playing Sugar Plum Fairy on acoustics when someone's trying to do some Murderbeaking. We'll be goofing lines up well enough without help. :b

I actually have a surprisingly large amount of faith that the group will intuitively understand when and when not to be silly. Hatoful runs the entire emotional spectrum, of course, and I would be concerned about potential ruination if we had someone trying to crack jokes during Ryouta's ending or something, but we don't. We went through the entire original game with 100% completion--nine episodes at anywhere from one to three hours apiece--and it just ... worked. The chat was there to keep score and celebrate every time a line was just too ridiculous and I cracked up in the middle of it, but was as respectfully silent as if it were a golf tournament (though probably just because they were just as caught up in it as I was) during things like Nageki's ending and certain parts of BLL (in all of which I came perilously close to actually crying as I narrated.) I think the closest anyone came to snarking any of those was when dr_dos reacted to one of the Nageki/Hitori flashbacks with "Lie Bot, what is the saddest thing?" to which I responded with "yeah, pretty much."

I mean, the feralmuse guest week started with me cracking up even more than usual because she launched surgically precise "COO!" strikes almost every time I had to read one of Okosan's lines, but then I got her back by making her do the coo solo in music class. (It also accidentally made me "dot dot dot" in the Pidgeworth voice just because she paused long enough on one of Sakuya's "..." lines that I thought she was waiting for me to say something.) By the end of all that silliness, which two routes did we actually do in that episode? Ryouta and Kazuaki? Right, then.

In conclusion, we ... I don't want to say we know how to handle this game, because I don't think that's ever truly possible, but ... we can at least keep up with the mood shifts, I think?

And of course you're not editing out any particularly good mistakes. If we had a policy of doing that, the guest week episode would have been ten minutes long. :)

Oh yeah, one other thing: NO MAKING OUTLANDISH GUESSES AT THE PLOT.

We all know how insanely accurate those turned out to be. :b

I will do my utmost to bite my tongue on them - even though I said I would do that every single time after I made a horrifyingly correct guess. (And it's not even that my guesses were... accurate - the game sort of took what I said as inspiration and then made it about a hundred times worse.)

All the more reason not to make any such guesses, then. Last thing we need is [[REMAINDER OF COMMENT REDACTED, JUST IN CASE.]]

Even if he manages to not say anything, I'm pretty sure I already doomed us just from that time he sent me a HolidayStar screenshot of [something]Nageki standing in a setting/background that appeared to be some sort of bus/train/subway/mass transit thing of some sort like that, with the seats and everything, and I responded with [a link]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1TaTSIDarZA.

Sorry. :(

No worries, I'm sure [Coo.]Okosan'll just suplex the train and everything'll be fine.

:D!

Yes, thank you for giving me the best mental image ever.

Granted, by saying that, you ran afoul of the "NEVER JOKE ABOUT WHAT HATOFUL WILL DO; IT'S JUST CRAZY ENOUGH TO DO IT" rule just as much as I did, but still. Totally worth it.
