Hatoful crew, assemble! We need to figure this out, guys.

As xaq has informed us, HolidayStar is coming. Obviously we are going to cover this. The question is ... how?

I know that I had said in the end of my Hatoful Livestream that I would retire after that and let someone else do HolidayStar, just because I don't want to hog all the spotlight or anything. davidn seemed to have a lot of fun with his mirror playthrough of the exact section of BBL he missed when I did it, so one possibility is to turn everything over to him. Of course, I understand other people wanting to get in on the action, too--it really is fun to do, to the point where I kind of want to jump back in, now, too.

My proposal: make it a show with however many cohosts. One person will be the one "driving" in that they're the one sharing their screen and clicking the buttons, but which decisions we actually pick would be a collaborative agreement. Voices would be divvied up so everyone gets a few characters, based on maximizing their strengths and letting someone else cover their weaknesses. (For example, I felt I had a fairly distinctive "voice" for Sakuya and Nageki, and maybe Okosan, but absolutely nothing for anyone else. If anyone does a better, say, Yuuya than me, please tag in and take over there.)

Is this technologically feasible? Is there a service that would let however many people participate in a conference call type arrangement, with one person sharing the screen, and the service recording the whole thing? If so, then I propose THE HATOFUL CREW HOLIDAYSTAR SHOW ... or something.

Also, would such a service be able to handle international stuff? I think of four people as being the main core Hatoful group, and of those four, we have three Americans (though one is in Alaska, which sometimes does or does not count depending on which exact service we're talking about) and a Canadian. If you expand it to people who I know would totally be up for something like this, except time zone differences/scheduling conflicts/etc. might make guaranteed weekly appearances tricky, then there are people from UK and such, I think.

Obviously there would be some figuring things out, since we're going in blind and have no way of knowing who any of the potential new characters are, let alone which of us should voice them and how. We can probably figure out the main eight Hatoful birds in advance and be ready for them if they reappear in HolidayStar, but other than that, I anticipate a lot of waiting for/being surprised by the sudden appearance of random new characters, and ... winging it (sorry) from there. Of course, it's easy enough to just announce a bunch of "attention people from the future watching these: the first couple episodes might be a bit weird in retrospect depending on what we figure out later" disclaimers. Hell, Sakuya's first and second appearances in episode one of my Hatoful stream didn't even have the Pidgeworth accent! So, you know, these things happen.

Anyway, my point is that this could be the best show ever if we can figure out a way to do it.

That'd be pretty neat. If that winds up not being feasible, though, I was kinda figuring we could divy it up among routes. You know, maybe one week DavidN does BirdA's route, then next week I do BirdB's route, then the next week you do BirdC's route, then about 4 weeks later we all start losing our minds again as we get exposed to HolidayStar's equivalent of BBL.

three Americans and a Canadian

Be careful ;)

Such a plan will always be difficult, not least because of the sheer madness of the script - synchronizing video, audio and being able to record all of them (from the call and from the source PC) at the same time. Skype or join.me get us video and audio sharing, but the recording would have to be done separately... (either by using a screen recorder or by adding Livestream to the setup again - with the second one providing the additional advantage of being able to record from multiple audio inputs, microphone and speakers, at the same time). It will take some experimentation, but we have all summer ;)

And if it does take off, there's nothing stopping us from re-recording the strange bits at the start!

Actually it looks like there a number of extensions for Skype which record the calls, though reviews on how well they do it vary... Evaer and Supertintin are two ($20-$30). That would be a great solution if they work - we could set up an experiment with the trial versions.

I think it's worth experimenting whether something simple like Audacity or Reaper could just let us each record our own parts while Skype is also sending it (or if only one application can use the microphone at once) -- and whether something like Reaper could ALSO record the entire skype call simultaneously, thus giving us all backups for each others' voices should something go sour.... (if not, at least one of us could record the skype call into a separate PC to have a single backup of everyone but themselves.) This would take some experimenting, but I think it should be feasible in a way that's reproducible for all the participants, for free....

Personally, I think the "someone else leads every time" thing would be fun, though it would also add an extra layer of complication, as more than one person would have to get the video capture rig set up on their machine (in addition to the audio capture setup they'd already be worrying about).

Having everyone take turns doing it by themselves would be easy; that just requires making everyone get the LiveStream Procaster (free download) and a microphone (which they'd need for any solution at all anyway.) It's just that I want to do a simultaneous cohost thing; I look back to episode 6 of my Hatoful stream (guest week with feralmuse) and even though I can pretty much promise you that she isn't going to be available, just the chemistry of having a cohost in general was awesome. How many times did I crack up in the middle of one of Okosan's translated lines just because she threw a well-timed "COO!" at me, again?

Plus, once we figure all the casting out, it should hopefully make the overall product that much stronger due to everyone getting their best roles; it wouldn't be as much of a liability that I only have distinct voices for Sakuya and Nageki while (for example) my Yuuya is awful, since it'd be my Sakuya playing off your Yuuya (or davidn's, or whoever's.) (Assuming the original characters will be returning in HolidayStar.)

And I'm definitely not against any option that adds extra redundancy, when the alternative would be just hoping the entire group can get through an episode without any of them crashing.

Whatever we do will definitely require a lot of experimenting and figuring out before we're good to go, but we have time while they're still working on the HolidayStar translation. Let's work on preparations so we can be ready to record it when it finally comes out!

No, no -- everyone would still do it every week, I just mean someone different would get to HOST every week. Granted it wouldn't be a tremendous difference if we're all there anyway, but getting to emcee and perform the actual clicking (and take the votes and such) would probably still be enough duties that it could be fun to let different people handle it :)

I think somebody's gonna have to take one for the team (or at least, ask a friend outside the Hatoful Crew to do so) and look at HolildayStar spoilers to at least determine how many new characters there are (and if any are missing), and maybe provide the VAGUEST of personality profiles ("cocky", "bashful") so we can at least have a stab at who might take them... as for handling the existing ones, we should probably do some "re-enactments" of choice scenes from the original game, both to test the streaming setup, and as dry runs for our voices....

Blah, now I'm starting to worry that this is going to fall apart under the weight of its complexity, like so many fancy pigeons... when folks couldn't make it to the first one, they'd just catch up; but now, we're going to be missing voice actors... not to mention, every time someone gets up to eat or something... It might be better just to stick everyone in a room and see what happens organically? (Or was that the idea, and I was reading too much into the "everyone take a part" thing...)

I was thinking to just play, and whenever a new character appears, the group would stop and have a quick "uh, you want to take this one, or...?" exchange before just randomly giving it to someone, based on perceived appropriateness or balance (if someone needs more lines or something) or just whatever, it's not like we can't trade later if it turns out we chose poorly the first time. I expect this approach to lead to some Early Installment Weirdness if we make any changes, but again, there are a couple scenes in episode 1 of my Hatoful stream in which Sakuya doesn't have an accent, so that wouldn't be the first time that's happened. Winging it like that should also serve as a safeguard against this whole thing collapsing under its own weight, which was a concern I had as well. (Also, I'm thinking if any of the main performers can't make it a certain week, we can either have a backup do their parts or just wait a week.)

I am totally down for doing a run-through of, say, Anghel's otome route in Hatoful, just as a sort of test/dry run of all the main characters from the first game. As for the second, there is at least a small hint of what we might be in for in that there's a HolidayStar section on the character mug shot page of the official site, but that doesn't come with any personality clues or anything. Again, I'm just going to take them as they come anyway. (Except just as obviously as I'm probably going to be the one who ends up with Sakuya again, it seems like infallible logic to me that Raven gets the raven.)

I did find that free one we did with Town of ZZT! Alas the second time I tried to use it with some friends it didn't record anything.

Really for voice you're much better off with a Ventrillo or Mumble server, either one of which I could get us access to.

I've used Mumble before - that worked quite nicely and felt lightweight.

Did you ever post that video, by the way? I never got to see it!

Excellent idea, now that you remind me of it. I used Ventrillo to communicate with my old WoW guild during raids; it (and Mumble, if it's anything like) worked quite nicely for real-time communication. Might not be able to make any permanent recordings of our bird-dubbings, but it'd work great for live sessions!

You are an American for the purposes of where you are currently geographically located, and whether calling you would count as an international call!

But yes, the good news is that we have a head start. I would like to get this worked out, so that when HolidayStar comes, we'll be ready for it. :) (Equipment/recording setup-wise, I mean. Psychologically, there is no being ready for a Hatoful game.)

Well, I am... in America, but that's different from oh never mind.

I just saw Debut on the thread about Skype video recording I found above, too - it's a desktop recorder, but it was highly spoken of and it also allows simultaneous microphone/speaker recording.

Yes, I know, you're actually British so long as Scotland doesn't secede, just as ravenworks is Canadian so long as Quebec doesn't secede, and xaq and I are American so long as people count Alaska and New Mexico as real states. Together, we are the most amazing ethnically and geographically diverse team ever of people who more or less count for their respective countries.

Heeey. I'm not actually here to destroy Earth! Even if people sometimes erroneously assume I am, and even if I play at it sometimes. c.c

Well, okay, I was sporadically for a while, but that's mainly because I'd had a bunch of components scrambled by being attacked by Earth people due to misunderstandings and then accidentally trying to “learn” things about human emotions that I can't safely “know”. But now I have more of my memory… back… and…

… hm. I'm not making a very good case, am I? c.c
