As far as grocery store chains go, Whole Foods is a little too hippie even for me, and anyone who knows me knows that's saying something.

My sister likes them because they actually have all sorts of things that even she (a vegan with a wheat-gluten allergy) can eat, and I like them because they have the absolute best peanuts ever (which I stocked up on to a rather alarming degree while I was there, because I hate shopping any more frequently than I have to and therefore like to alter my diet to consist of non-perishables and then get a 4+ month supply of everything) but...they have a homeopathy section. :(

Also got some new nail polish...Smith's didn't have the blue I usually get and I kind of felt like a change anyway, so I picked up a sort of lavender one. It's getting harder and harder to pretend there's any heterosexuality left in me.

There's a Whole Foods up the road from us - we did our first shopping trip there when we arrived, before discovering that there was a more standard supermarket round the corner in the other direction. Most of why we changed was just because it was more expensive than we would have liked to go there regularly - I don't need bread with 18 different grains in it and soap made out of the milk of Tibetan yaks, just a sandwich and some traditional artificial toxins will do.

Did I mention that I went with the lemon-scented nail polish remover this time? Because if there's anything an extremely strong acetone-based chemical that will probably kill you if you huff it needs, it's a fresh lemon scent.

Frequent (ab)use of acetone during my two years of a chemistry degree removed most of my sense of smell, anyway. I'm surprised that anything in that place contains acetone, because I noticed that even their bleach contains no bleach, it's made out of... unicorn tears, or something.

Oh, the nail polish remover didn't come from Whole Foods. That was from Smith's, which is basically the local grocery store. (Every region seems to have one local grocery store not counting Wal-Mart and such, but it's always different because they seem to carve up regions like gang territory, so no one knows what anyone else is talking about. New Mexico used to be Furr's territory, but then Smith's took over, or something.)

We still have a few other chains. Albertson's, for example - which is also 100x better than Smith's.

Is it? Supermarkets are sort of a binary state for me--either they have the three or four things I can't get at CostCo (shampoo/conditioner, hair ties, and my pretty pretty princess nail polish) or they don't, and Smith's does. The only think I can think of that Albertson's could do to be better is if their vending machine for lotto scratchers was out of order less often.

I still have to drag your tail over to the other store, so you can see the difference in quality.

As long as you don't start calling yourself a pretty pretty princess, we're ok.

Homeopathy is becoming alarmingly common in normal stores lately. Walmart and Smith's both sell HeadOn and that Airborne crap. It's all in its own little section, but that section is in the pharmacy.

Could be worse, though. It's so common in Australia (in pharmacies right next to actual medicine, where you would expect to find generics and store-brand knockoffs) that there's starting to be a backlash against it.

It is pretty darn awful in Whole Foods, though (shut up, I wanted black eyed peas, and nobody else had any). I couldn't believe just how much of that garbage there was. There were even ear candles in the checkout aisle, next to the mints. I felt like most of an outsider in there than I had in quite a while.

Hey, I'm with you on this one. Even though I'm more of a hippie than you are, neither of us are close to hippie enough for Whole Foods, and we both just went there anyway for certain goodies, your black eyed peas and my awesome peanuts.

From all the talk about it, I have to wonder...should I feel relieved that I've never even heard of Whole Foods?

Dude, you live in Alaska. I'd be stunned if you had anything hippier than freaking Sportsman's Warehouse.

Am I anti-hippy enough to not know what that store is?

And should I now let Brother coyote out of the closet?

Used to be Wild Oats before being bought out, if that rings a bell. If that one doesn't either, then yes.

And yes.

It does, vaguely. I think I tried to firebomb the place for not carrying fresh cowmeat for my dragonly appetite (back in 1994 or something), before I got all sickly and invalid.

And are you sure? I mean, once Brother coyote is out no hole within five hundred yards is safe from penetration.

I can't believe I typed that with a straight face.

The lavender nail polish gives you away.

And I just shot myself up with tranquilizers to avoid letting Brother coyote loose on the unsuspecting world. He is too terrible a thing.

*loads, shoots self*

It is a far, far better thing that I do now, than I have ev .. ever ... d ... zzzzz ...

Yes, anyone who has lavender nail polish probably should stay away from him, even if said person probably doesn't actually want to. One of those better judgment vs. "against my better judgment..." type deals.
