I love when some people take so much offense, like it's personal to them or something.. like if there's anybody doing something they wouldn't, they're doing something wrong?

It's just that one guy, John McWhatever, who seems to be afraid people will judge him if he doesn't summon up the most dramatic disapproval he can think of.

As a general rule, if you're simultaneously afraid of being judged and in the ZZT community, you are doing something seriously wrong. We are all total degenerates and horrible people; the cool people are the ones who are self-aware and play along with that. :D

That's not one guy. I'm going to assume that John_McCrank is craNKGod playing around with his name, because people on IRC tend to do that to the point where no one knows who anyone is anymore. (You'll notice that lemmer called John_McClane "coyote," and even I don't know who AirportSecurity is supposed to be, though he's obviously a regular.)

It's just one of many subtle nuances that can best be summed up as "The ZZT community is nutty."

ZZT is fun. It's fun to see what you can do with it, and there's something uniquely charming about how it's a basic level editor that was never meant to do anything more sophisticated than The Town of ZZT, but once you've discovered all the workarounds, you can do seemingly anything. You can make everything from RPGs to 2D sidescrolling platformers to a Tetris clone if you're just willing to make a convoluted enough Rube Goldberg-style engine to pass messages between objects that shoot north or whatever to make the latest amazing effects that were obviously never meant to happen, happen, and that's neat. The game came out in, what, 1991? and new tricks and workarounds are still being discovered.

But yeah, the community...takes a bit of getting used to, shall we say.
