Movie recommendations?
All right, in slightly more important news, I need to know how Sweeney Todd is.

See, I'm kind of torn on whether I want to see it. On one hand, when I saw the trailers and stuff, it was like, "ehhh, no." Sure, it's Tim Burton and Johnny Depp, but so was Edward Scissorhands, and I hated Edward Scissorhands. (Ed Wood is awesome, though.) Plus, I hate musicals.

On the other hand, everyone I know has been going on about how awesome it is. If it was just [info]yiffyraptor then it wouldn't count (he likes everything, so the Yiffy Seal of Approval has lost its much of its economic standing due to excessive inflation) but it's...like...everyone, including people whose recommendations I actually take seriously. Then again, everyone else loved Edward Scissorhands, too. :(

I had a chance to see it a couple days ago, but I just couldn't muster the necessary excitement, so I used the "hey I'm visiting a friend and watching a movie" time to see Clerks II instead. No regrets there even if Sweeney Todd is awesome, because Clerks II was incredible and I'm glad I got to see it. We also made plans to go through the rest of Kevin Smith's work sometime, since there are only three movies of his either of us have seen (Clerks, now Clerks II, and Dogma) but we each really liked all of them, so now we're intrigued.

So basically, I had zero interest in Sweeney Todd at first, but if enough of you tell me I should see it, I guess I'll have to believe you..

I'm kind of "meh" when it comes to Tim Burton films... I tend to think that he's already peaked, and now his stuff is just ok. I'm usually more of a, "Oh, look... another Tim Burton movie with Johnny Depp. I'm sure one of my friends will rent it eventually.." Keeping in mind that I haven't seen all of Sweeny Todd, I'd recommend you check it out... the parts I've seen looked better than a lot of Burton's stuff, especially recently.

For what it's worth, I'd also recommend watching the Kevin Smith movies in order, as there's a lot of backstory that's explained as the series goes along.

Out of curiosity, what didn't you like about Edward Scissorhands? That might help isolate whether that same property is what people like Sweeny Todd for or not...

(For the record, I haven't seen it yet either!)

It's been forever since I saw it, but if memory serves, it was kind of...bleak. Parts were sad, and the rest was just boring.

I'm pretty sure this is also why I absolutely loathed Napoleon Dynamite (which does an excellent job portraying how much it must suck to live in rural Idaho, but I wouldn't exactly call that entertaining) and hate Judd Apatow's directing style (The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Knocked Up,) though oddly enough, I actually really liked Clerks and Clerks II for their almost slice-of-life-ish nature on top of being funny.

Well, Edward Scissorhands was meant to be bleak, yeah. Along the same lines as Napoleon Dynamite... which I admit was hard to watch for shame/guilt-related reasons, but oddly compelling once I got past that... though Edward Scissorhands was hard for me to watch just because I can't stand witnessing misunderstandings x_x; (Which rules out most modern sitcom plots while we're at it.)

So I dunno! I'm hoping the fact that it's musical will make it more interesting...

Sweeny Todd is still on my maybe list. I'm not too interested, but like you, everyone has heard about it. D:

As for movie recommendations... Surf's Up. D: Seriously. It is a very chill, awesome movie, and not for the furry factor. Very underrated in my opinion.

Sweeney Todd was OK. I saw it in the theater and after the first 3 or 4 words of the first song of the first scene I shouted "Aw, man, it's a MUSICAL?" really loudly. The songs weren't TOO lame but they teetered the line the entire time. Thankfully Alan Rickman hardly ever sings, so he quickly became my favorite character. But then he sings, and he sounds like Jean-Luc Picard. There was a lot of ridiculous violence, which is a good thing I guess.

In conclusion: it's worth seeing I guess

Also: The only other good Kevin Smith movie is Mallrats

As you know I am a super fangirl of the Sweeney Todd story. I am probably very biased.

The story is very convoluted; every character is intertwined with the others in some way, even obscure ways. Even the BEGGAR WOMAN (major spoiler). For example, Anthony (who I hate) rescues Todd and brings him to London. Anthony falls in love with Johanna, who is Judge Turpin's ward and Todd's daughter. That's the least-spoilerific example i can give you.

The movie is a little boring, especially if you don't like musicals. There is no violence until about halfway through, and at times it seems very overdone. Some parts were cut out -- a large part of the Anthony and Johanna scenes, which are actually kind of important in the sense of giving the viewer a time frame (Johanna is sent SPOILER and Anthony searches for 6 months)

All in all I did find it to be an enjoyable experience, once we get past the over-the-top bloodfest. The story is deceptively deep. I had to watch it twice to see some things, but then again I am not a very perceptive person.

Would rent but not buy unless you're into the whole singing, murdering barber thing.
